Other addictions

When you hear the word ‘addiction’ what does it make you think of?

  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Sex?

You can be addicted to much more besides, and many young people are getting hooked on digital:

  • Smartphones
  • The Internet
  • Gaming
  • Gambling
  • Apps
  • YouTube
  • Pornography
  • Online shopping, and the list goes on.

What about real life?

Online addictions may mean you stop looking after your life, friendships, hobbies, school work in the real world. It’s important to think carefully about getting a balance between what you do on your phone, tablet or laptop, and how long you spend getting fresh air, hanging out with friends face-to-face and away from a screen.

Tips for overcoming addictions

Be honest. Can you get through an evening without your phone, gaming or whatever you find addictive?...

...If you can’t, challenge yourself to switch your device off, or whatever it might be, and do something different all evening.

If you don’t belong to any clubs or local groups, think about joining up. They’ll provide a new, fun focus and help you to step away from your addiction.
